I have been searching for this poem for the last 48 hours. I read ‘My First Poetry Book’ as a lad and this is the one that stuck in my head. Turns out that it doesn’t exist ANYWHERE online, its referenced in a couple of places (eg primary school syllabuses) but nowhere as a transcription. After some real life searching, we have it. Here is a scan and transcription. I hope the world is now a better place. In spite of the fact that I’m aware there is very little demand for the poem outside of my head.
Zanzibar Pete and Zoom-along Dick - Nancy Chambers
Zanzibar Pete and Zoom-along Dick
took a picnic to eat in the park.
They took so much food
(without being rude)
that they had to stay there until dark.
Zanzibar Pete and Zoom-along Dick
picked up all of the litter they’d made.
Then they felt so much thinner
that they won’t home to dinner
and ate a lot more, I’m afraid.
